Intel today unveiled its newest Extreme Edition processor, the Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition, replacing Core i7-975 as the top-of-the-line Intel processor.

The Core i7-980X Extreme Edition, codenamed as Gulftown is Intel's first six-core processor for consumers, targeting mainly gamers and well-heeled multimedia professionals.

On Monday, online retailer NewEgg confirmed that the shipment of Core i7s processors was fake, and it has cut off its dealings with IPEX, the supplier.

At first, Newegg said that it was a shipping mistake since there were some orders asking for demo boxes instead of functional units.

Intel, in a brief statement, confirmed on Monday that "at least one counterfeit version of its Core i7-920 processor" trickled its way into the U. S. market. A spokesperson from the hardware giant said, "We are trying to determine how many more are out there".

Intel Corp. recently shared that one of its top chiefs, Sean Maloney, suffered a stroke and would now be taking medical leave which is expected to last for several months.

Intel, the world's leader in silicon innovation, will expand from its primary business of providing micro processing chips for computers and servers, said Chief Executive Paul Otellini on Wednesday.

In its recent 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Intel Corp revealed that it had also faced a “sophisticated” cyberattack in January this year, “around the same time as the recently publicized security incident reported by Google,” Abode and over 30 other leading US companies.

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) - which this year round has been witnessing a flood of Operating Systems and platforms - Monday saw the unveiling of a new Linux-based platform – MeeGo, which is the result of a team-up between Intel and Nokia.

Nokia and Intel announced on Monday that they will merge their respective mobile Linux platforms, Maemo and Moblin, into a single platform call MeeGo, which will be hosted by Linux foundation. Nokia, the world's top cell phone maker said that it will merge its Linux Maemo software platform, used in its flagship N900 phone, with Intel's Moblin, also a version of Linux.
