Microsoft investigating WordPad vulnerabilities

A day after its December 9 Patch release, Microsoft Corp said it is investigating reports of a vulnerability in the WordPad Text Converter for Word 97 files and zero-day flaw affecting Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.

GPS functionality removed from Egyptian iPhones

The New York Times and the Telegraph report that Apple's 3G iPhones used in Egypt will disable the functionality of the GPS chip, because of the Egyptian government's belief that the GPS features could be a military security risk, and, as such, should be limited only to the military in that country.

LG demonstrates smartphone chip for fast downloads

Claiming a step forward in the commercialization of the next generation of Internet capable handsets, LG Electronics Inc. revealed a modem chip that uses technology standard called Long Term Evolution (LTE), and has a download speed eight times that of the fastest mobile phones currently on the market.

Novatel’s new device MiFi a ‘smart hotspot’

The "intelligent mobile hotspot", known as MiFi - a Wi-Fi hot spot in essence - was announced by Novatel Wireless Inc on Tuesday. The new pocket-size modem device combines a 3G modem, router, and embedded Linux-based PC, designed to let mobile users connect a variety of devices to wireless wide-area networks.
