According to a Fox News report, Internet search giant Google, despite its threats to withdraw its operations from China after the recent cyberattacks’ issue, is involved in “delicate” talks with the Chinese authorities to work out a way to retain some of its activities in the country.
As per the report, both China and Google are basically conversing about the ways by which the search biggie can maintain its research center, an advertising sales team, as well as its new mobile phone venture in China.
Earlier in the month, Google took a moral stance against the cyberattacks that apparently targeted Chinese human-rights activists, saying that it would stop censoring search results in China.
While the last week speech by the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton seemingly backed Google in its spat with China, announcing some Department of State initiatives for combating repressive Internet policies by some countries, especially China; US officials, by and large, have refrained from openly lauding Google’s anti-censorship decision.
All said and done, in case the Fox News report is correct, Google ought to tread cautiously in its negotiations with China - shutting down its search operations in the country, and working out a ‘backroom’ agreement to continue its other businesses there, will only make Google appear hypocritical!
