The Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), today, announced that Daniele International Inc. is going to expand its 23rd January's meat recall to include approximately, 17,235 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) varieties of Italian sausage products, including salami.
The recall is being expanded because the company says that the meat may be contaminated with Salmonella. The product which was tested was not included in the previous recall, issued on January 23rd. But it is similar to products bought by customers who later became sick after eating the Montevideo investigation. The company believes that black pepper is a possible source of Salmonella contamination.
Further testing of the products is going on at a state health partner laboratory. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), FSIS, state health and agriculture departments and Daniele International are a part of this analysis program.
