It has been reported that the lid that Twitter had placed by informing a selected few of its users to change and reset their passwords has been lifted by the micro - blogging site. It was previously assumed to be a guidance that had actually come as a response to a normal or common phishing attack.
Twitter came up with an explanatory post about the attack which was much more elaborate and devious. The Torrent user sites was established by hackers with forums that had hidden backdoors to break into accounts of other third party sites like Twitter.
The attack was based on the fact that most people used the same username and password as a combination for various accounts and that made it reliable for hackers to get to the information easily. They only had to wait for a short while for the site to become famous and gather more users to make the most of the available login details.
Twitter found the attack after identifying two accounts with too many followers as a sudden surge and advised them to change their account information and the interesting fact was that the hackers had just wanted to gain more followers. The only advice was to have different password for each service.
