The British Medical Journal had linked the measles-mumps-rubella vaccination to autism, twelve years ago. But the journal has retracted its claims saying that the study was compromised by researcher, Dr. Andrew Wakefield who had "callous disregard" for the children used in the study.
The federal Food and Drug Administration has recommended that thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative found in many vaccinations should be removed from vaccinations.
Lisa Rudley, parent of aggrieved autistic child has filed a claim in “Vaccine Court,” created by the federal court to help parents whose wards suffered from reactions to vaccinations .She recalls “I watched my son descend into illness after being vaccinated.”
Actress Holly Robinson Peete remembers how her son’s body could not handle the vaccine which resulted in a violent reaction with convulsions and then he stopped talking and slipped into a silence.”
Television and radio commercials are promoting advertisements to fight autism epidemic. Parents are made aware of the signs of autism, such as the child’s inability to express jubilance, imitate facial expressions and sounds, and babble by 12 months of age.
Nationally recognized autism expert, Ginger O'Conner from the Washington County Board of Developmental Disabilities argues that continued research is necessary to tackle the issue. He believes that children should continue to be vaccinated since the risks of not doing so are far greater.
