The installation of two diagnostic machines at Hospital in Savusavu and Labasa have extended a relief to many patients in Labasa in Fiji as they have no longer have to travel to Suva for some diagnoses.
The Fiji Times says that for the first time an Echo Cardiograph and an Ultrasound machine have been installed as part of the health ministry’s efforts to decentralize services in the country.
The machines are part of a 4 and a half million US dollar purchase from Korean supplier. The machines are reportedly expected to be operational by next week.
Ministry spokesperson Iliesa Tora quoted, "With the machines expectant mothers from rural centers will be able to access service easier and quicker, which will mean that those who used to travel long distances and risk and their child's health with complications can have easier access".
Head of the hospital’s medical department, Doctor Mikaele Mua, reveals previously cardiac patients would travel to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva for treatment.
In addition, he adds that patients suffering from an abnormal heart rate or a murmur, earlier had to refer Suva and the hospital would carry the transportation costs.
