Additional Strikes Against Greek Government Threatened by Unions

On Monday, Greek civil servants issued a warning that they could call for more strikes if the Socialist Government goes ahead with the unveiling of the strict austerity measures in order to cut its deficit and curb the rapidly growing public debt.

It is now official that the ADEDY public sector union will already be striking for a total of 24-hours on Wednesday, while Prime Minister George Papandreou puts the final strokes to a deficit-curbing plan, endorsed by the European Commission with the aim to pull Greek finances back from the troubled verge that they have reached.

"We will strike on Wednesday to defend our dignity, to put an end to our sacrifices on the altar of financial markets. These are pointless sacrifices", said ADEDY President Spyros Papaspyros.

The Government's official emergency tax reform and wages bills are most likely to be unveiled during the ongoing week, and go on to become a law before the month comes to an end, but details in the bills have managed to anger all of the powerful Greek unions.
