The collections of ten ‘Project Runway’ contestants were showcased Friday at the New York Fashion Week, as part of the reality show’s plan to prevent the names of the three finalists a secret, only to reveal them at the end of television season.
Of Fashion Week’s ten designers, only three are the true finalists, however, their names will not be revealed to the television audience, until the ending of the show’s seventh season this spring.
With the decoy collections edited out in the televised finale that is when the winner will be announced.
Only five contestants have been eliminated on this season’s ‘Project Runway’, a reality show that allows design hopefuls to have their designs critiqued by a panel of judges, even while pitting them against each other on Lifetime Network television. Typically, as in other reality shows, each week begins with the elimination of one contestant.
The ten designers collections consisting of 10 designs apiece were put on the runway at New York’s Fashion Week, with critics and bloggers alike saying the current season had featured some of the most talented designers to appear on the series.
The exhortations of keeping their collections cohesive, telling a story, including espousing a point of view, along with tailoring and attention to detail were in well in evidence.
While, contestant Ben sought inspiration from the ‘The Martian Chronicles’, Jonathan’s was an ‘experimental study in volume’, shadows inspired Mila’s collection and Amy’s embraced ‘photographic digital prints and pleating’, even while crime novel and film noir inspired Jesse, with a 1940s Russian and German military focus doing it for Seth.
Amongst the judges was a fashion designer - Michael Kors, a magazine editor - Nina Garcia, including a model - Heidi Klum and a singer – Faith Hill as a guest judge.
Difficult though it was to guess the finalist, colourful Antony William seemed the crowd’s favourite Thursday night, with the outfit he designed for supermodel Heidi Klum to wear on the cover of April's Marie Claire magazine.
The dress, a short, one-shouldered turquoise concoction with ruffles received compliments from Klum and Garcia, while Michael Kors praising it said: ‘The costume drama is over. You have entered modern times. I have to tell you, this dress is sexy without being slutty. It’s modern looking; the colour’s great.’
The winner of ‘Project Runway’ will received $100,000, plus a $50,000 technology package, a spread feature in Marie Claire magazine, together with enviable publicity.
