Nintendo’s latest gadget, DSi XL, will enable the consumers to read books on it.
The first DSi XL e-book offering, a chunkier, larger-screened version of Nintendo’s wildly popular gaming device will be a cartridge containing 100 public domain books, including classics such as Twain and Shakespeare. It would go on sale in the United States on March 28 for $190.
Nintendo has sold roughly 130 million DS consoles and the global popularity of the DS platform might make Nintendo a serious e-book competitor.
Compared to the original DS and DSi, which had 3-inch and 3.25-inch screens respectively, reading the books on the DSi XL, with its 4.2-inch screens would be a more pleasurable experience.
Nintendo’s device could be the book-like, with two displays that can be held up side-by-side.
Nintendo’s Sales and Marketing Vice President Cammie Dunaway said, “It’s just one more way to enjoy your device. It shouldn’t start and end with the public domain”.
Wired’s Chris Kohler concluded that the larger screen of Nintendo DSi XL wasn’t just some frivolous purchase but was completely awesome.
Nintendo’s move shows that the company was trying to make its gadgets more useful in new ways for the customers.
