Excitement Surrounds Google Broadband

Much excitement has been generated by Google's announcement that it would soon provide high-speed Internet access to as many as 500,000 people from across the US, a move which will help many previously ignored areas enjoy services which are at par with those provided in the most posh of places.

Everyone is now eagerly awaiting the launch, and cities and towns from across the country which are relatively broadband-starved are now going to great lengths to grab the attention of the Mountain View, California-based search engine giant.

In February, Google had shared that it will be setting up a network which would offer speeds of 1GB/s, which is nearly 20 times faster than the speediest ones currently sold be Verizon Communications.

Reports are that Google would be spending "hundreds of millions" on the effort.

The city of Topeka, Kan., has actually gone ahead and renamed itself Google, Kan.

"I thought it was fun and would be interesting and would make us a little different from some of the other cities. Hopefully, the people at Google have a sense of humor", said Topeka Mayor William W. Bunten.
