WellPoint Inc. has decided to assist people by providing health insurance, for which it was going to invest a ransom of $30 million over the span of three years, but could not invest the stated amount. It could only give $6.2 million.
In 2007, just as Democrats took control of Congress, WellPoint pledged that its charitable foundation would spend $30 million over three years as part of a comprehensive plan to help address the growing ranks of people without insurance plans.
One of the spokespersons of the company cited that the company did not intend to invest low amount intentionally. The company expects to use a higher percentage of premium revenue--84.3%--to pay members medical costs this year. A majority of the projected 170-basis-point increase is a result of WellPoint's recent move to re-categorize certain benefits, including nurse hotlines and disease management, so they're integrated in the medical-cost ratio calculation.
WellPoint, has come under sharp criticism for recent planned increases in individual and small-group rates in California, and the state's insurance commissioner has the authorities to inspect whether the company's Anthem Blue Cross plan is using at least 70% of premium revenue for members' benefits as needed by California law.
