In accordance to the Reuters news agency the insurance giant formerly known as Fortis possessed a standard procedure of targeting its policyholders with HIV, based on newly released court records.
The company, now known as Assurant followed a policy of committing fraud investigation on policyholders who were diagnosed with HIV using a computer algorithm.
Such a disturbing scenario, we all need to be cognizant about our current structure of group health insurance. We should know that the current structure involves no incentive for health insurers to be fair
The question that widely disturbs everyone is that why they eliminate more of the sick people through what they call "recission"?
It is just that the more money of our money they incur instead of using them or rather what they call "wasting" on sick people.
This was discovered after a case involving a 17-year-old African-American teenager who had contracted HIV came into light in 2002. Jerome Mitchell, a college freshman from rural South Carolina at the time, discovered that his insurance company revoked his policy shortly after he was diagnosed with HIV.
In addition, last year, the South Carolina state Supreme Court ordered Fortis to pay $10 million in damages for repealing the health coverage of a policyholder who had diagnosed positive for HIV.
It is simply distressing for all of us as we simply could not get rid of such betrayal activities of health insurers, until legislation is passed that outlaws recission.
Here I would like to ask something- How many Republicans wanted to get tough with the insurers? Well the answer is quite obvious, none.
The situation actually demands for tough attitude towards the insurers, pushing for a public opinion. It's an ugly practice that needs to go away.
