Idea to Install "Panic Button" Ruled Out by Facebook

Facebook

The popular social networking website Facebook has officially announced that while it is completely ruling out an option to install a "panic button" on the main page for users to immediately report suspected pedophiles, it will develop its existing system to ensure that it is safe enough.

The company announced that it will be placing links to organizations like Child Exploitation and Online Protection (Ceop) centre on its main reporting pages across the website.

Ceop Director, Jim Gamble, however, feels that there should be a button on each and every page of the networking platform. "So that children are reassured and empowered, so are their parents, and offenders are deterred. That's the key", he said.

The renewed calls for a "panic button" were a result of the murder of 17-year-old Ashleigh Hall by serial sex offender Peter Chapman, who are lured the teenager to her death via Facebook.

On an earlier occasion, the Home Secretary had shared that Facebook Executives had informed him that they had "no objection in principle" to installing the safety button.
