Healthcare Bill Gains AFL-CIO Support Despite Concerns Over Tax

On Thursday, the country's largest labor federation sent in its decision to offer complete support to, and endorse, the Obama Administration's healthcare revamp bill, in spite of all the ongoing concerns over a tax that could be imposed on high-cost insurance plans.

The union leaders on the AFL-CIO's Executive Council recently voted literally unanimously to offer their complete support to the plan, and also said that they would aggressively lobby the undecided Democrats.

"After a lot of deliberation by our national unions, the AFL-CIO has decided today to put our strong, active support behind the President’s health care bill. We're idealistic enough to believe that this is a time to change history that we cannot afford to miss", said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

The union officials seem to have reluctantly accepted a change in the proposal which would end up indexing the tax to the Consumer Price Index, instead of the CPI plus 1%, a development which would ultimately prove to be too expensive for many union policies.

Mr. Trumka has, however, shared that he is hopeful that this might just be modified before the tax comes into effect starting 2020.
