Going by a Saturday blog post on the official website of Canadian mobile software developer Viigo, the company has been acquired by the BlackBerry smartphone-maker Research In Motion Ltd (RIM).
The Toronto-based Viigo is known for having developed a popular RSS reader that delivers syndicated content - news, politics, sports, weather, and the like - to smartphones in an easy-to-read format.
Though RIM is yet to announce its acquisition of Viigo, Mark Ruddock - Viigo’s president and CEO – said in the blog post: “Our team has joined RIM's global organization and will continue to bring our expertise in BlackBerry application development and real-time content delivery to the BlackBerry platform.”
The Viigo acquisition, the financial terms of which remain undisclosed, can largely be seen as a ‘smart’ move on the part of RIM, particularly in the increasingly competitive smartphone arena, where manufacturers are vying to catch the attention of the buyers by offering newer and more unique services and applications.
Noting that potential buyers of smartphones are easily enticed by the number of apps that a platform offers, technology analyst Deepak Chopra, at Toronto’s Genuity Capital Markets, is of the opinion that RIM’s take over of Viigo might be an indication that the company is looking to take on iPhone-maker Apple as well as its assemblage of application makers.
