The attention of the public-health officials is recently being drawn to an infectious virus which has been found to be linked with two diseases. The officials are trying to look in to the substantial threat to the country’ blood supply.
The public-health officials have so far been clueless about the danger of the virus and they have not been able to collect enough proof about the virus being contagious.
Although preliminary evidence suggest that XMRV has similar capability to HIV in being contagious. The aim of the official is to investigate whether the drive to protect the blood supply is required.
The discovery of XMRV happened in 2006 when it was seen in the tumor samples of a male suffering from familial prostate cancer. The researchers have also found the association between the virus and chronic fatigue syndrome and also located them in the blood levels of healthy people.
All the evidence has not been of much help to the scientists because they lack the characteristics of being inclusive.
Jay Epstein, Director of the Office of Blood Research and Review at the Food and Drug Administration said, "These are early days trying to understand the public health significance of XMRV”.
A paper published in the Journal Science revealed that virus was found among 101 patients tormented by chronic fatigue syndrome.
