Better Medical Care Required in Old Age Centers

Doctors and nurses have said that, health care provided to Australians in old age care centers should be immediately enhanced and more strongly observed.

The Australian Medical Association has called for a novel authorization scheme for nursing homes; following a government report that revealed grievances made to the Department of Health and Ageing in 2008-09 were about medical and special care of inhabitants.

The major problems incorporated continence supervision, medical care and managing of communicable illnesses.

AMA president Andrew Pesce stated, ''The AMA wants the government to introduce a formal nursing home accreditation standard on access to medical care for all nursing home residents, with proper monitoring of aged care homes against this standard''.

According to the Government report, Victorian services got the maximum criticisms and violations, with 328 cases of inveterate offense (30 per cent of the nationwide total).

A Federal Government Spokeswoman said, the Government had augmented backing for old care by nearly 20 per cent in the last two years.

It is said that in Victoria, simply registered nurses or people overseen by registered nurses are permitted to manage prescription inside old care centers under the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act (1981).

According to the Gerard Mansour, Chief Executive of Aged and Community Care Victoria, he had resisted the release of data, since it controlled personal data of inhabitants and employees.

It is said that court trial still needs to be planned.
