The officials at the Liverpool City Council are planning to ban the word obese for children.

It has been seen that the highest childhood obesity rate is found in Britain. In Liverpool, approximately half of 11 year old boys and 40 percent of 11 year old girls are overweight.

The plans to ban the word obese for the age group of 9-11 were stimulated by the suggestions made by the School Parliament.

It was told by the council that the word obese had too many disadvantages. According to them, this word was discouraging for the youngsters who were overweight and wanted to adopt a healthy eating and exercise program. Whereas, it was told by the health campaigners, that the restriction of this word would become a serious issue.

"To a dietician or health professional, obese is a clear label for an individual with a Body Mass Index in excess of 30. BMI remains the best indicator of a person's weight level, and includes the terms overweight and obese. Clearly an individual who reaches the obese category is risking serious health problems, and needs to understand the severity of their weight problem”, said Sion Porter, from the British Dietetic Association.
