Streptococcus mutans, a type of bacteria causes cavities. It is transmitted through contact or using the same utensils as the parents.  Children do not carry the bacteria in the mouth right from birth.

The absence of good bacteria in the child’s mouth gives an impetus for strep mutans. It produces an acid which attacks the enamel.

A local dentist, Rhee opines that parents should ensure that once their children get their first tooth, there's no opportunity to pass on the bad bacteria. It takes at least two years for the good bacteria to grow. The presence of good bacteria is a must to prevent cavities.

Dental officer of health Dr. Bill Ryding says, "A child should see a dentist (by) their first birthday or when the first tooth erupts -- comes into the mouth.”

Parents should watch what their children eat when snacking. They should also ensure that the children clean their teeth with a fluoride toothpaste before going to bed.
