Yoko Ono, the widow of late Beatles singer John Lennon has allowed the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) charity to John Lennon as the star of the new commercial, about Internet access for children in developing countries. In the clip, a virtual Lennon, in a digital sew-up of his voice says: 'Imagine if every child, no matter where in the world they were, could access a universe of knowledge. They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want. I tried to do it through my music, but now you can do it in a very different way.'
As multi-colored pixels form an image of Lennon, who looking into the camera says: 'You can give a child a laptop and more than imagine, you can change the world.' Twenty-eight years since Lennon was shot at as he stepped out his house, yet the ad. Haunts you. However, this is not the first time a digital reproduction of a celebrity has been used for commercial purposes. There was Fred Astaire dancing with a vacuum cleaner for a Super Bowl ad., while Elvis Presley and Jim Henson, creator of the Muppets also appeared posthumously in commercials.
However, Yoko Ono, who in the past has refused to lend Lennon's image for commercial ads, definitely approves of OLPC founded in 2005 and whose purpose for the ad. is to provide children in developing countries with durable, solar-powered laptops that cost only $200. Just 'Imagine' if they achieved their goal!
