If reports are to be believed, Hulu could be turning into a paid service by the coming month. Even though no official announcement has been made by the company, reports peg the rate of monthly subscription at $9.95. By paying this flat amount users may be able to watch the old episodes of their favorite shows.
The popular video streaming site helps viewers to watch the five latest episodes from Fox, NBC and ABC channels. Even after it goes paid, it will stay like this but after those 5 episodes a user may have to take a subscription for more shows.
The website was making money through online advertising but the model does not seem to be sustainable anymore. It may be noted that the site is owned by Disney, Fox and NBC.
Viacom has already stopped two of the most popular shows on Hulu, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Hulu would join the ranks of other sites like Netflix, if it starts a subscription service. The New York Times is reporting that the service might have an iPad application and also receive support from Dell's upcoming Android phones.
The change may lead to Hulu losing a majority of its users. Many people doubt the wisdom of such a move on the part of Hulu. But there are some who feel that, given the circumstances, it may prove to be a success in the coming days.
