Oregon has been added to the list of states that have banned smoking in bars. According to estimate of Health organizations, 20% Oregon citizens smoke.
Though the rate is lowest in the us, yet the ban has been initiated keeping in mind a future increase in numbers. The authorities have chosen the New Year as the time for banning smoking as many people would take resolutions at this time. The ban would further strengthen the resolutions of such people.
A study has also indicated that due to the global economic crisis many people are getting addicted to smoking as an escape from stress. Contrarily, the cost of cigarettes is increasing day by day.
According to statistics, by avoiding a pack of cigarettes a day, a smoker would be able to save almost $2,000 a year.
But the ban has received a negative response from the bar owners who feel that the ban would affect their business.
However, it received a mix response from the smokers.

Anti bar smoking in Oregon
Hello worrywarts in Oregon and elsewhere!
I live in a smokefree city/county and in a state that is likely to go smokefree soon. My city is across the river and the state line from cities that allow smoking. In contrast to what you predict, there has been no reduction in bar use (or restaurant use, for that matter...they as well as the bars are smoke free). In fact, we are seeing an increase in use because the people who want to drink and dine without smoke drift from adjoining tables are crossing the river to patronize our bars and restaurants.
Terrible article
This is a terribly written, unbelievably one-sided article on an issue that has negatively impacted the economy of one state (Illinois) already. Oregon should receive negative feedback, because it will affect business. The number of receipts will drop, as will the average total per receipt. Bans on smoking in public places do absolutely nothing to affect the rate of smoking within a particular area. In Illinois, people go to Wisconsin or Indiana, or bar owners simply ignore the law. Oregon will be no different.
welcome to the club!
California has had smokefree bars for 10 years now. The sky did not fall. Bar business did not go down. All the terrible things in the fear talk spread by Big Tobacco didn't come to pass. Bars got safe air. Bar workers got fewer heart diseases and lung diseases. That's all. Welcome Oregon! Clean, safe, air is basic workplace safety.
