Researchers from Purdue University and the University of New South Wales, Australia warn of the severe effects of global warming. They claim that if the green house emissions are let out at the current rate, planet Earth would be inhabitable by humans and mammals.
According to the reports, the temperature of the earth would rise considerably due to global warming, and have dire consequences for living beings.
With the current pace of global warming, it is claimed that the highest tolerable temperature for survival of living beings could be surpassed.
Researchers have calculated the ‘wet bulb ‘temperature. As per them, wet bulb temperature is the highest tolerable temperature in which living beings can survive. There is widespread concern that if corrective measures are not taken to control global warming, the temperatures could exceed the wet bulb limit in the future.
Wet bulb temperature is calculated taking into account the temperature and atmospheric humidity. The name is derived from the way it is measured.
Wet Bulb temperature is measured by covering a standard thermometer bulb with a wet cloth and ventilating it fully.
According to the lead author of the paper, Steven Sherwood, ‘prolonged wet-bulb temperatures above 95 degrees would be intolerable after a matter of hours.’ He further added that if wet bulb temperatures are reached, humans would overheat even if they were naked in the shade or standing in front of a fan.
He explains this is because, beyond a certain point bodies could not eliminate heat through sweating and other biological mechanisms, in turn increasing their core body temperatures.
The study to be published in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences does not determine the time for the future climate scenarios but warns of the severity of the situation.
