Great spotted kiwi Brought Back to the Nelson national park

A species of kiwi is reported to have been relocated to part of Kaurangi National Park in Nelson where the native bird was believed have become all but extinct.

The data reveals that seven male and five female great spotted kiwis has been released in the park's Flora Valley.

FoF Chairperson, Maryann Ewers posted that it had been a striving challenge for FoF to raise the initial $24,000, of the total $96,000 funding required for the project aimed to bring kiwi again in the Flora area.

He quoted, "To have this iconic bird - the great spotted kiwi - back in the Flora after decades of silence has been a 10-year dream and three years of hard work for our FoF volunteers to prepare for it. We welcome the kiwi - long may they breed in safety in the Flora!"

The Department of Conservation has extended a huge applause for Friends of Flora community group who have worked over the past decade in a view to trap predators over a 5000km area just to get back the kiwi.

The group's fundraising efforts is reported to include a walk the length of the South Island by member Des Lehndorf.

DOC Motueka Area Manager Martin Rodd expect a boost in the visitor experience in the area with the return of kiwi to the Flora catchment and it possessed benefits for the great spotted kiwi species as well.
