A number of volunteers in Sydney will be taking forward a program called “Feed Sydney” in collaboration with Cumberland-Courier Newspapers to raise awareness on the wastage of food as well offer nutritious meals for up to 250,000 vulnerable people this winter. The event will kick off on June 1 and continue till June 30.
Celebrated activists like Ronni Kahn, of food rescue charity OzHarvest, and Jon Dee, of action group Do Something will also be a part of the awareness drive.
It will be launched at the Newtown Mission on June 1 by OzHarvest patron Therese Rein who is the wife of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
“We hope to increase awareness about food insecurity and food waste and that ordinary people, all of us, can contribute to the cause’’, said Ms. Kahn.
OzHarvest is essentially a food rescue program which has managed to feed a lot of needy over the last 6 years.
It has been noted that 2 million Australians are dependent on food relief at some or the other time during the year.
The Feed Sydney month has gained grounds in view of the millions of tonnes of food found wasted in restraints and homes.
