Across the world, it has been studied and found that the highest amount of alcohol abuse persists in the continent of Australia. The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre conducted this study and revealed that out of every five Australians, one of them abuses alcohol and four out of them go untreated.
According to Professor Maree Teeson, alcohol abuse is associated with the impact of drinking in one’s life, and not with how much amount of alcohol one drinks. With this, he adds that seeking help for the problem of drinking has a stigma linked with it, because of which many people go untreated.
Prof Teesson said, “People are much less likely to want to own up to having a problem with alcohol than they are about other physical or mental illness yet their abuse of alcohol has serious consequences”.
Also, it has been accessed that out of the population of all ages, young men are the most prone population, which faces these problems of drinking. And they hence, end up ruining their health with these problems.
The study also revealed that 18% of Australians are at a high risk of facing periods of problematic drinking in their lifetime, and 4% can also end up becoming alcoholic. Symptoms of problematic drinking include incapability to work at home or work, alcohol-related disputes with spouse, or confrontations with the law.
