WellPoint suspends enrollment of new members

WellPoint, the largest health insurer in the state, announced suspension of fresh enrollment of members in Medicare health plans. The possible reason for the decision is the dispute between WellPoint, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

However, the company clarified that the decision would not affect the members who were already enrolled with the company.

It has been temporarily banned by federal officials from marketing or selling Medicare health or drug plans. The ban was executed WellPoint denied thousands of seniors coverage for important drugs and cancel their benefits. WellPoint had faced some computer problems which further complicated the problem leading to cancellation of the benefits to many.

For the past six months, WellPoint Inc. has been working with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to resolve issues. These issues are related to the company's internal compliance audits and findings from a recent CMS audit.

At present the companies are engaged in an independent third party to provide CMS with data related to verification of systems, processes and procedures.

The ongoing problems have affected many seniors who were unable to fill or renew prescriptions for drugs to treat chronic heart failure, seizures, asthma and other medications.
