A Case of Legionnaires Disease Reported

A man living in a care home has been detected with the possibly fatal legionnaire’s disease. The resident of the care home has been admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital.

Medical experts are carrying out tests at the Rose Court Care Home in Water Street at Radcliffe, where the man was residing when he was infected by the disease. Tests are being carried out to ascertain the source of the illness.

The aged man is being treated at the Fairfield General Hospital in Bury; he was admitted in the hospital on Wednesday after he complained of severe stomach pains. The condition of the man according to the doctors has been stated to be serious even though he is stable.

The investigation that would be carried out at the man’s residence would involve quite a lot of departments of the Government like the Health and Safety Executive, Environmental Health Department of Bury and the health protection unit of the Health Protection Agency in Greater Manchester.

They would be investigating to find out how the man contracted the disease that is found in water. A consultant in communicable disease control at the Health protection Agency, Dr. Marko Petrovic stated that at this point of the time, it was difficult to find out the exact source of contamination but further investigations would be carried out to locate the source.
