A new U.S. study on climate change in Antarctica has found that Antarctica too is experiencing the effects of global warming. The study has revealed that the temperature of Antarctica is rising, in other words, it is warming like the rest of the world.
The study, which appeared in the journal Nature’s Thursday issue, was conducted to study the effects of global warming in Antarctica. The researchers from the University of Washington found that Antarctica has been getting warmer for the past 50 years.
According to the researchers, warming in West Antarctica surpassed one-tenth of a degree Celsius per decade for the past 50 years, which more than offsets the cooling in East Antarctica.
One of the lead authors of the study, Professor Eric Steig of the University of Washington, wrote in the study that the entire continent of Antarctica experienced its annual temperature rising by about 1 degree Fahrenheit since 1957, but the temperature is still 50 degrees below zero. He also articulated that West Antarctica that is about 20 degrees warmer than the east has warmed nearly twice as fast.
According to Professor Eric Steig, scientists had long been thinking that East Antarctica is cooling, but it is actually warming on yearly basis for over the past 50 years.
The researchers used information from satellites to conclude that the temperature at Antarctica is rising too, like Earth's other six continents. The study, however, did not point to the effects of man-made climatic changes on the Antarctic warming. NASA scientist Drew Shindell, co-author of the study, said, "We can't pin it down, but it certainly is consistent with the influence of greenhouse gases.”
