Mysterious are the ways of Google! Of late, it pulled proverbial the rug from under the iPhone's unsuspecting feet! Without any prior warning to Apple, the iGoogle website designed in particular for the iPhone has been stopped abruptly.
With the special treatment from Google being discontinued, the iPhone-formatted edition of iGoogle now redirects traffic to the generic Google Web site formatted for mobile devices. As such, it goes without saying that the iPhone users are infuriated!
The version of the iGoogle page was exclusive to the iPhone - it optimized for the Mobile Safari browser, along with offering sections that were expandable or collapsible, used for displaying custom gadgets.
In spite of the sudden iGoogle move, Google is reportedly going ahead with the applications - Google Earth exploration, Google Maps directions, Street View, and enhancements for voice searches - for the Apple smartphone.
Commenting on the move, an employee from the Google support forum said: "We decided to direct iPhone users to the standard mobile iGoogle Page. We've found that people hit iGoogle from lots of different phones - we want to ensure you'll all see the same version. Most or all of your existing content should translate over to the standard mobile version. The only exception would be any gadgets that aren't compatible with most mobile browsers."
