Facebook reportedly set to launch “Gmail killer” email system on Monday

According to a Friday report on the tech-focused blog TechCrunch, popular social network Facebook will soon unveil “across the board” changes to its messaging system; thereby making the product a serious challenger to the Google’s Gmail service.

At a press event on Monday, Facebook will reportedly unveil its much-awaited email system ‘@facebook.com’ - a secret product that the social networking company has been rumored to be working on since February.

Though there is still no official confirmation Facebook about its new email service or its much-talked-about launch on Monday, reports say that the project pertaining to the service is officially called ‘Project Titan’; though most Facebook executives unofficially refer to it as “Gmail killer.”

In the opinion of tech industry analysts, a new email system by Facebook – which boasts over 500 million users – along with the company’s popular photo and events programs, apparently have the potential to pose a serious threat to Gmail.

Furthermore, in case Facebook, as anticipated, launches a Facebook search engine which can prioritize results around the known preferences of a user’s circle of friends, the commercial potential of social networking will become notably extensive.

Meanwhile, Google is also supposedly building a social networking platform itself to compete with Facebook – even though CEO Eric Schmidt has been reiterating that the company plans to add “layers” of social networking to its products.
