Obama to reverse Bush’s climate change policies

The climate change policies of former President Bush will soon see a reversal from President Barack Obama, who will order 2011 vehicle fuel efficiency standards to be set by March, thereby giving states the authority to limit greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.

It is at the assertion of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger that Obama to overturn the Bush administration's doggedness on a single, national standard. At the behest of President Obama, the EPA - Environmental Protection Agency - will soon grant California and 13 other states an exemption from the federal Clear Air Act, thus allowing them to set their own standards on fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions.

The pioneer state in terms of environment protection, California, along with other states, had sought exemptions to set their own standards. Though the request met with a denial from Bush's administration, it will now be granted.

Since the final decision by the EPA might take months, Obama would likely instruct the EPA to approve the waiver that would permit California to enforce the rules.

President Obama will also undertake measures to fulfill his campaign promise of cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions and increased investment in renewable energy sources.

Towards that end, Obama is likely to order the transportation department to suggest new short-term rules enabling carmakers to improve fuel efficiency. In addition, he is expected to announce plans for making all federal government buildings more energy efficient.
