LG recalls cell phones over radiation emission issue

About a quarter million LG cell phones have been recalled in Ottawa due to excessive radiation emissions.

The voluntary recall was issued when it was detected that the Korea manufactured, LG 150, did not meet Industry Canada specifications for radio frequency emissions. It is suspected that the emissions are 25 percent more than the specified limit.

The phone was sold in Canada by Bell Mobility, Virgin Mobile, MTS Allstream, SaskTel, Aliant Mobility, KMTS, NorthernTel, Sogetel, TDelDebec and Tbay Tel.

"Based on the review of test results and an assessment of current science, the past and current use of the LG 150 should not pose immediate or long-term health concerns," said Stephane Shank, a spokesperson for the agency.

This is the first instance when a mobile phone sold in Canada has been decertified on the grounds of excessive radio frequency emissions according to the set standards A spokesman for Bell Canada also clarified that the company was replacing the cell phone at no cost. Virgin Mobile is also giving the affected customers a $25 bonus airtime credit along with the exchange of the cell phone. The exchange facility will be available till 31 March.
