Durham Raw Milk Crusader Schmidt to Win His Battle

Michael Schmidt is almost the verge of winning his battle over what he called the right of choice. Schmidt who is from Ontario had run a programme in which the consumers can become a part-owner of the dairy cows in his farm from which they are getting the milk.

The programme which was earlier questioned, has been ruled by Justice of the Peace Paul Kowarsky to be compliance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act and Milk Act, despite prohibitions on selling unpasteurised milk.

But the crusader argues, "This is not about milk, this is about the respect for the individual's right to make choices without government interference." He says that people should have their rights to consume raw milk and he took it as a challenge 16 years back to make the sale of raw milk legal in Ontario.

He feels that this is a challenge to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The year-long trial that ended in January 20, 2010, discovered that the innovative cow-share programme of Schmidt did not violate the Provincial Laws.

Schmidt has influenced many other dairies to come up with plans to sell raw milk to the consumers. A Chilliwack raw-milk dairy is selling raw-milk labelled as Cleopatra's enzymatic body lotion and raw-cream as massage cream. A British Columbia dairy farm is being helped by Schmidt with similar ideas, too.
