Many questions have been raised by the women across the country after the frequent failures of much-acclaimed Implanon, a temporary contraceptive were reported.

Inadequate and improper implantation led to hundreds of pregnancies in last week itself. It was reported that no less than 584 women got pregnant and more than 1,607 complained of the wrong implant.

Moreover, it has been found that Implanon comes with their share of side-effects ranging from acne to breast pain and skin diseases to irregular menstruation.

Initially, Implanon was considered a perfect choice for contraception as it was claimed to have just 0.05% failure as compared to 8% in pills. A major advantage being that it was a temporary measure so that women can go for pregnancy whenever they intend to.

Licensed in 1999, Implanon is a matchstick-sized rod which is inserted into either arm to release hormones which further prevents pregnancy. Moreover, women were not required to take it regularly and there were no hassles like those in oral contraceptives.

But it has recently emerged that there are many discontented customers as there are frequent scare of being pregnant and many with implantation observing heavy bleeding.

However, Dr Alyson Elliman, vice-president of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology maintained that the though the Pill and Implanon are quoted as being over 99% effective, that is only possible if they are used properly.

Dr. Elliman further blamed it on improper skills for implants and called for a standardized training programme, however many medical experts refuted by emphasizing on its side-effects and thus, advised people to go for other superior contraception alternatives.
