Wyong Council Discovered Asbestos in Shelley Beach Landfill

There is asbestos in the landfill in the Shelley Beach vicinity. Wyong Council has deputed skilled contractors to clear the site of the harmful element as soon as possible as exposure to asbestos causes Mesothelioma, a form of cancer.

The operation which has been funded from the Council's rehabilitation funds of $12 million will be completed in a period of 3 weeks.

The Special Projects and Contracts Manager of the Council, Mr. Mike Long said that an inspection found a cement sheet lying scattered in small amounts in the area.

The work at the Shelley Beach Landfill site ended in the early 1970s. It is primarily covered by the car park between the boundary of the southern part of Tuggerah Lakes Golf Club and Toowoon Bay Holiday Park.

According to a hygienist's advice, the problem can be resolved by a preliminary cleaning of the small pieces and a cleaning of overload material, turfing and capping of some places thereafter.

The Council is extra careful about the whole process as it asked the contractor to make the work safe. They want the eastern border to be revegetated and recovered. A proper fencing will be done along the roadside and adequate signs will be posted to make people aware of the danger of the area.
