According to the reports a health warnings has been issued for Lake Ellesmere. This report informs people that humans and dogs should stay away from the lake.
The community and Public Health Division of the Canterbury district have been warned about the increase concentration of blue-green algae in the lake.
People are thus requested to remain away from the lake until the health warnings are lifted. These blue - green algae are extremely dangerous for the humans and the dogs. The animals and dogs should be taken to the vet if they show any unusual symptoms.
According to the Canterbury health officer Dr. Alistair Humphrey there is an increased chanced of respiratory, irritation and allergy problems due to the exposure to algae.
"If you experience any of these symptoms visit your doctor immediately and please let your doctor know if you have had contact with the lake water", he said.
People are requested not to drink water or go for fishing in the lake. Boiling water will also not remove the toxin.
Another toxic algae warning has been issued for the Selwyn River near Whitecliffs yesterday. This has requested humans and animals to stay away from the area until the health warnings are lifted.
