Struggling to grow out of its market share losses, the Schaumburg, Illinois based Motorola has agreed to sell its Good Technology to the Redwood Shores, California based mobile email provider Visto, which is looking to expand its services on the market.
Good Technology will be acquired by Visto, said Motorola, in a statement, confirming the transaction. However, the mobile maker did not disclose the terms of the deal. Visto stated that it expects to close the deal by the end of February.
Good Technology was purchased by Motorola in 2007 for more than $400 million. The technology specializes in offering wireless messaging, mobile virtual private network (VPN) data access, device management and handheld security for enterprise customers.
Geoff Blaber, analyst with CCS Insight, said, "The acquisition of Good Technology will give Visto an enhanced presence in the North American market and greater scale which is now essential to compete with Microsoft and RIM."
Motorola has been vexed by the market share losses in its mobile phone business. Last month, the company announced to lay off
4,000 workers, including 3,000 staff from the handset division. With layoffs, the mobile maker was looking to cut $1.5 billion in costs.
Commenting on the Good Technology deal, the president of Motorola's Enterprise Mobility Solutions, Gene Delaney, in a statement, said, "We believe that this transaction is in the best interest of our customers, employees and shareholders."
