Owing to the increasing number of women veterans, the US Sen. Charles Schumer has stated that the Department of Veterans Affairs need to build a pilot program at a New York veteran hospital, which will provide the childcare for women veterans receiving medical care.
Sen. Schumer, according to reports, sent a letter to V. A. Secretary Eric K. Shinseki, asking for the consideration of the Veterans Integrated Service Network in upstate New York. He expressed that he hoped for a response to the letter by the end of this month.
Schumer also stated that there had been a 24 % increase in the number of females enrolled in the upstate Veterans Integrated Service Network.
It was reported that the congress authorized the V. A. to select at least three sites across the country and allocated $1.5 million for each fiscal years of 2010 and 2011. Though the program has not been actualized because it was not operated well, further delays could ruin funding.
The V. A. was reported to have surveyed the field for available sites and is trying to determine most suitable and valuable site for the building of the pilot
Moreover, the pilot program is said to provide stipends to veterans who want to place their child with licensed, private day care providers during medical treatment, and increase access to other federal facilities and programs that provides the same.
