CBS Mobile launches its free mobile application - TV.com

With CBS having acquired the TV. com web site in 2008, CBS Mobile Thursday launched its TV. com free mobile application, which provides the iPhone and iPod touch users the access to select CBS shows - including CBS News, Sports, and Radio - as well as the CW, Showtime, and Cnet.

A statement by the App Store says that the TV. com app works on EDGE, Wi-Fi and 3G. The app makes use of the iPhone's standard QuickTime player; and the video quality delivered, though not stellar, is quite "decent" nonetheless.

While the BBC has arranged for the free streaming of its content to iPhone users in the UK, via its iPlayer app; the news CBS Mobile offering is the first of its kind in the US - with free TV content streaming straight from a TV studio.

To begin with, the programming selection is somewhat of a constraint - presently, most of the content comprises clips, promos, and interviews.

However, there are also a few full episodes of some TV shows, though the presentation of these shows is in the form of multiple clips, rather than a single video.

Initial quick tests of clips using a Wi-Fi connection indicated the instability and coarseness of the application, but with a few fine tuning touches in some places to overcome the so-called teething problems, the application can be quite promising!
