Miscommunication between a Mother and Ambulance Services Took Life of Her Son

Leonardo Sala (11) of Mount Andrew Court in Lucan Co., Dublin had acute inflammation of the colon, which is secondary to chronic constipation. When his mother called for an ambulance to bring him to hospital, she was advised by the ambulance staff to give him 7Up. After consuming the drink, the boy immediately broke up and died at the Children's University Hospital in Temple Street, Dublin on July 21 last year.

Maria Sala, the grieving mother of Leonardo, broke down in tears yesterday and told the court that she phoned on two occasions for an ambulance and she wept during the investigation saying that how staff on the first ambulance suggested her to give Leonardo 7Up.

A narrative verdict has been recorded, which consists of all the facts regarding the case. According to Dublin city Coroner Dr Brian Farrell, there definitely exists a matter of miscommunications involved between Mrs. Sala and ambulance people.

In this regard, he has decided to ask all the hospital’s pediatric metabolic units to consider giving a care card to patients, which during an emergency, they could present to the emergency services and at A&E departments.
