Decision on Soil Treatment Facility to Be Revealed After Two Months

Residents of Dandenong South will have to wait for about two months to hear the final decision on soil treatment facility. The new soil treatment could potentially treat hazardous waste and will help in significantly reducing the waste in the region. The project is designed by SITA Environmental Solutions.

The decision on the soil treatment project was deferred because Greater Dandenong Council and community members have formally opposed plans for a soil treatment facility at the Lyndhurst tip. The panel is now considering shifting the site from farming to industrial for the treatment plant, which would treat contaminated soil at the site.

The panel will consider the submissions that were made, state and local planning policy, previous panel reports and Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal decisions before making the final decision.

After the panel summits all the details to the Minister, the decision will be released to the public within 28 days. If the project will be approved by the Minister and then by the Environment Protection Authority, 60,000 tons of category A contaminated soil would be transported to and treated at the Taylors Road site each year until 2022. At present, only category B and C soils are treated at the site.
