Obesity is the king of problems and it usually gets along several other problems. USA is aware of the fact that it has large number of obese children, and owing to that the National Lipid Association (NLA) has asked children to get their cholesterol checked.
Generally, there are two types of cholesterol -- good and bad. Good cholesterol is referred to high density lipoprotein (HDL), which aids in removing cholesterol from the walls of arteries. On the contrary, bad cholesterol is low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. High level of LDL causes heart disease. This has been proclaimed by a team of researchers from the University of Warwick. They have termed it as MGmin LDL.
To assess it, take the total cholesterol level, and then deduct the HDL amount, the resulting figure would help to take the decision. If the non-HDL level is more than 190, the child is likely to be suffering from the problem.
NLA has recommended that, all children as young as two should be screened for high cholesterol. The problem is often genetic and named- familial hypercholesterolemia. The children who are at high risk includes hereditary problem of heart disease, family history of high cholesterol, congenital heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure.
Remedy of it includes change in diet, physical activities, reduction in weight and inclusion of soya in diet. But, if these changes do not work, then a child is put on medication, and statins are preferred for kids.
