The annual conference of New South Wales Nurses' Union will be held in Sydney. Three nurses from the union will participate in the lectures and workshops at the conference. The theme for the conference is organizing safe patient care. The conference will also include a workshop for participants on how to secure higher nurse to patient ratios.
The nurses union has said that say they will soon be enforcing safe patient quotas in local hospitals or they will start to close beds. The local Branch Secretary, Bonnie Tavian, said that they have already secured the nurse-patient rate it’s just required to be implemented.
She also said, “We've gone through scenarios of if this happens at your hospital, how as a union delegate you can help your members on the ward at that time, negotiate with management for either more nurses or the closure of beds”.
According to the Agency for Healthcare, Research and Quality, more than two patients should not be assigned to each registered nurse.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the nurses at Mountain View Hospital were assigned three or more critically ill patients. It could affect the quality of patient care.
