Can Palm Pre make Apple iPhone users abandon iPhone?

It appears that Roger McNamee, the major Palm investor, is little over enthusiastic about the Palm Pre. In an interview last week, McNamee touted that the Palm Pre is going to be the "coolest product on the market," and the Apple iPhone users will switch over to the Palm Pre.

According to McNamee, the Apple iPhone users' two-year contract will be expiring in June, when the Palm Pre, the internet-connected multimedia smartphone designed by Sunnyvale, California based Palm, Inc. will be released on the market. The market impact of the Palm Pre will be that Apple iPhone users will switch over to the Palm Pre.

In a March 6 interview, McNamee said, "Not one of those people (Apple iPhone users) will still be using an iPhone a month later."

"If you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market. Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they're going to buy," added McNamee, who is a co-founder of Elevation Partners, which has presently 39 percent stake in Palm Inc.

With the Palm Pre, Palm is looking to gain market from the RIM BlackBerry and the iPhone. According to reports, the Palm Pre will feature an iPhone-like touch-screen that slides up to reveal a QWERTY keyboard. The designer of phone came from Apple, who suggested the dual touch-screen/keyboard at Apple, but the idea was rejected by Apple.
