Researchers to Create Artificial Blood

Following the invention of artificial organs, the researchers are now working towards creating artificial blood by using blood of woolly mammoths. It has been informed that the woolly mammoths were shifted to cold regions of Eurasia one or two million years ago. Their thick body and fur helped them in surviving in the cold temperature of Eurasia.

Researchers are of the view that by studying the DNA of these mammoths, artificial blood for humans could be created. The research is being led by Chien Ho. The scientists believe that the changes in the DNA helped them adopt deferent climates to survive.

The researchers have successfully converted the DNA of mammoths collected 25,000 to 43,000 years back to protein. The hemoglobin thus formed was compared with that of Asian elephants and human beings. They found that the proteins of the mammoths were capable of circulating oxygen to the body even in the cold temperature.

However, the protein of humans and Asian elephant was not capable of adapting to the cold temperature. And this is the reason why a surgery fails when a patient's body temperature becomes too low. The researchers will be conducting further studies to create artificial blood for humans.
