Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia Have Common Genetic Variants: Study

A research team has revealed a link between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia that would lead to an enhanced treatment of the diseases by curing the common genetic variations that the two diseases posses.

In the two different studies, scientists have located nearly 11 variations in a particular division of the genetic code that has a correlation with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia both. Out of these 11, six variations are newly identified.

University Of NSW Psychiatrist Philip Mitchell stated that with the location of the genes new treatments can be developed for bipolar disorder. Nearly seven medications which are being used for the treatment presently have not shown any quality results and even with the continuous medication patient ends up in committing suicide.

The researchers have recognized those patterns which were found in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder patients but were not present in healthy persons. Two genetic variations were surfaced, first one that determines an outlet through which calcium ions pass to membrane and another one that plans out the articulation of a particular protein on a cell's surface.

"These two variations were strongly linked to schizophrenia and bipolar, explaining previous observations that people diagnosed with one condition often had family members with the other", Mitchell said.
