Ali Hassan al-Majid, known as "Chemical Ali," was sentenced to die Tuesday for quelling a Shiite uprising against Saddam Hussein, Iraqi officials said.

Tuesday's punishment was the second death sentence for Majid, who was condemned to death for his campaign against Iraq's Kurdish population, CNN reported. Majid is a cousin of Saddam's.

More than 14 other former Iraqi officials are on trial over the 1991 Shiite uprising in southern Iraq, including former Defense Minister Sultan Hashim, Saddam's half-brother Sabaawi Ibrahim al-Hasan and his private secretary Abed Hammoud, reported KUNA, the Kuwaiti news agency. Abdul-Ghani Abdul-Ghafour, a member of the defunct Regional Command in Basra, also was sentenced to death.
