Certainly an embarrassing one but a litany of reports caught the Sony Corp off guard as it was revealed that many of the Bravia flat-panel TVs sets sold since 2007 in various countries could have a faulty component which triggers fire.
There have been reports that the maker of those Televisions had been put into a tight spot after it was revealed that one of the customers had found small fire in TV. Post this report in September, there were 11 similar reports being found in Japan since 2008, which put the company in a difficult situation.
Confirming the same, Yuki Shima, a Tokyo-based spokeswoman, said that there are chances that the faulty component might have got overheated, though no final word on the actual cause has been communicated.
The only breather for the company is that no human injury has been reported, however, the company has issued orders to recall 1.6 million Bravia flat-panel TVs. It has been confirmed that the questioned models are LCDs with KDL-40D3400, KDL-40D3500, KDL-40D3550, KDL-40D3660, KDL-40V3000, KDL-40W3000, KDL-40X3000, and KDL-40X3500.
With the news hitting the contours of the market, it has been observed that shares of the company rose by 1.4% to 1,517 yen in Tokyo trading, though on an average over the year, the shares have faced a fall of 48%.
Moreover, the company has appealed the consumers to switch off their LCDs in case they notice something fishy. Nonetheless, the damage being done to the reputation in the market is irrecoverable.
